2009 Buick Open: Remembering Warwick Hills
With the recent news that General Motors will no longer sponsor the PGA TOUR's Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Michigan and that the tournament will no longer be played at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club, it seems appropriate to remember some of the best Buick Opens that have been played at Warwick over the years.
Here is a list of my top five favorite Buick Opens:
1.) 2004 Buick Open
- In 2004, Vijay Singh played the finest golf of his career, winning nine tournaments, including the PGA Championship. By the end of the season, Vijay had also surpassed Tiger Woods to become the number one ranked golfer in the world - a feat that many golf analysts did not imagine Vijay ever accomplishing. In the meantime, the 2004 season was John Daly's comeback year as he won the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines and played some of the most consistent golf of his career. It was not surprising, then, that Vijay and John were in the last pairing during Sunday's final round. Daly started off strong with three birdies and an eagle during his first four holes. Both players went head-to-head throughout the round, but Singh eventually defeated Daly by one stroke as he finished the tournament 23-under-par. The 2004 Buick Open will be remembered for perhaps having the best final round showdown in the history of the tournament.
2.) 2001 Buick Open
- Kenny Perry's golf game was firing on all cylinders during the 2001 Buick Open. By finishing the tournament at 263 (25-under-par), Perry established the tournament's all-time scoring record, which has yet to be surpassed. Chris DiMarco and Jim Furyk finished two strokes behind Perry at 23-under-par, a score which would have been low enough to win any other previous Buick Open. The 2001 Buick Open was the fourth PGA TOUR victory of Perry's career. Since then, Perry has won ten more PGA TOUR titles.
3.) 1989 Buick Open
- There was not a dry eye to be found at Warwick Hills when veteran Leonard Thompson captured his first PGA TOUR victory in almost twelve years. By shooting a final round 68, Thompson finished the tournament with a 273 (15-under-par) to defeat Payne Stewart, Billy Andrade, and Doug Tewell by one shot. Thompson's victory drought still remains one of the longest in PGA TOUR history.
4.) 1986 Buick Open
- Throughout the early 1980s, Ben Crenshaw was one of the best golfers in the world and a regular contender in all of golf's major championships. However, after winning the 1984 Masters, Crenshaw's health began to deteriorate as he suffered from Grave's disease, a thryroid disease. By shooting 270 (18-under-par) for the week, Crenshaw defeated J.C. Snead and Doug Tewell by one stroke for his first victory since the Masters two years earlier. With the win, Crenshaw proved that he was still one of the best players in the world, despite his health condition.
5.) 2002 Buick Open
- Tiger Woods' first Buick Open victory was well-fought against an unlikely candidate - little-known Esteban Toledo. During the entire weekend, the journeyman challenged Woods shot by shot. Ultimately, Tiger defeated Esteban and three other golfers, including his good friend Mark O'Meara, by four shots. However, Toledo's play against Woods will be remembered for years to come.
