Geoff Ogilvy Successfully Defends Season Opener at Kapalua
It appears that one tournament victory at Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course is simply not enough for Geoff Ogilvy.
Last year, Ogilvy dominated the Mercedes-Benz Championship, while cruising to a six-stroke victory over Davis Love III and Anthony Kim.
While Ogilvy did not necessarily dominate this year's edition of the season-opening tournament, now known as the SBS Championship, he still joined fellow Australian golfer Stuart Appleby as the only person to successfully defend the tournament in the last twenty-seven years, since Lanny Wadkins obtained his second consecutive victory in 1983.
With a final-round score of 67 (six-under-par), Ogilvy captured his seventh PGA TOUR tournament victory, his first since the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship last March.
Even though he had not won a PGA TOUR tournament in about ten months, his fellow competitors surely could not notice his "slump" during the last four days. While finishing the tournament at 22-under-par (two strokes higher than his dominating performance of 24-under-par in 2009), Ogilvy not only defeated third-round leader Lucas Glover by eight shots, but he also showed the golf world that he is well-prepared for a strong 2010 campaign.
As the 2006 U.S. Open champion, Ogilvy has played well in major championships ever since, with three top-10's in the last three seasons. However, Ogilvy has proven that he has the skill sets and mentality to win even more high-pressure, well-respected tournaments during the coming years.
With one victory under his belt already, there seems to be no reason why Geoff Ogilvy should not be highly favored in all four of golf's major championships this year.
During the coming months, Ogilvy will strive to not only obtain more PGA TOUR victories, but another major championship as well, in order to enter the history books as a two-time major champion.
Surely, no one in the "golf world" will be surprised if Ogilvy obtains one of this year's major championships, if not more.
